Main Scientific Results | 2º Year (2010-2011)
2º Year (2010 – 2011)
Details of research methods and results obtained during the period covered by this report are described in published and in press reports (papers, books, and book chapters), listed below. Some unpublished data are described in master’s Theses and doctoral dissertations listed in the Academic Program section. The full texts of published papers are available at http://www.ufscar.br/ecce.
Table 2 shows the total number of publications and the average per researcher; for comparison purposes, the table reproduces data included in the Report # 1. During this last year, there were 36 published articles (22 in Brazilian journals and 14 in international journals; 16,6% in journals indexed in the ISI); 32 other articles are currently in press (23 in Brazilian and 9 in international journals; 15,5% in indexed journals), and 22 manuscripts have been submitted and are currently under review. Statistics were based on a group of 26 researchers[1] (two more than in the first year, given that one researcher left the project and three were included in this second year of the project). Compared to the baseline of publications of this group (data from the 1998-2007 period; see the Institute’s project, p.115), the global number of publications increased during the first year of this project, and continued to increase slightly during the second year, as shown in Table 2.

Figure 1 shows that the total of published papers in the second year (36) was almost the double of the baseline (20.4) and this number does not take into consideration paper in press.
In the second year the average of papers was 2.6 per researcher and the proportion increased to 3.7 when books and book chapters were computed (Table 2). Thus, the Institute continues pursuing the goals of improving the research and its dissemination, both qualitatively and quantitatively. However, the proportion of papers published in indexed journals continues far bellow from what should be expected from the quality and originality of the scientific contributions of this Instittute. This pattern, however, seems to be less the result of a high rejection rate, than the reflexes of a culture that encourages submissions to familiar journals. Efforts will be directed to increase the submissions to indexed journals.

One important aspect of these results is the cooperation among the Institute´s members in conducting the research programs and in co-authoring publications. Figure 2 represents these interactions measured as co-authorships in papers, books and book chapters.
Figure 2. The Institue´s network during 2010-2011, represented by co-authorship (papers, books, and book chapters). Interactions with researchers outside the INCT were not included.
[1] Publications of researchers from the foreign institution (UMASS) were included only when in co-authorship with Brazilian members of the Institute.
